The Apprentices Act, 1961 (the Apprentices Act) was enacted with the objective of regulating the programme of training of apprentices in the industry by utilizing the facilities available therein for imparting on-the-job training. The Ministry of Labour and Employment after receiving many suggestions from various quarters regarding making changes to the Apprentices Act, has made certain amendments thereto in December 20141 (“Amendment Act”) in order to balance the interests of all stakeholders i.e. the youth as well as the industry. While introducing further operational timelines and obligations on employers, the consequences of non-compliance have been softened.
